The
100 Black Men of DeKalb County, Inc., is proud
to celebrate its 15th year anniversary. In 1991,
the vision of the founding president, the late
Dr. William C. Brown, was to expand the Leadership
Academy program to reach more students and include
more schools. The DeKalb’s 104 members
have carried on the dream of
Dr. Brown to have more involvement from students,
schools and the entire community.
In February 2006, students from all DeKalb County
schools convened in one location as partners
of the 100 Black Men to host the first annual
Youth Leadership Development Summit. With more
than 300 middle and high school young men in
attendance, the Superintendent of DeKalb Schools,
Dr. Crawford Lewis, declared to the students “a
charge to lead.” Prominent leaders in DeKalb
County joined Dr. Lewis and promoted the importance
of leadership skills, health, wellness, substance
abuse, crime prevention and entrepreneurial skills.
As the Executive Director, I joined the 100 Black
Men of DeKalb to continue to raise the standards
by which we are measured. Our programmatic initiatives,
the PC Academy, the reading program, the book
club, the chess program, the enrichment program,
and the parents involvement are vital components
of the Leadership Academy. These programs are
providing the students with the necessary skills
to succeed socially, academically, and ultimately
financially. Our actions today will lead to
tomorrow’s results.
The sponsors of the 100 Black Men of DeKalb have
made it possible to offer the students a comprehensive
program at Southwest DeKalb High School. The
students reap the benefit of: a reading program;
Toastmaster International; computer program;
banking & finance; culinary; and
a chess program. We, together with our partners,
will bridge the social, economic, and academic
digital divide in our community while preparing
one student at a time to become leaders in our
society.
If we continue to strive to make a difference
in the lives of others, then others, will
make the difference. |

HISTORY
The DeKalb County Chapter 100
Black Men of America, Inc. was formed in 1992 with 14
businessmen from DeKalb County. The men wanted an organization
in their community where they could devote their time
and resources.
The Leadership Academy, the flagship community program,
was conceptualized in 1991 to target young African
American boys who are the target group in the community
and at risk. The Chapter Board of Directors empowered
the President-Elect to proceed in establishing a leadership
program through the DeKalb Public School System. Working
with the Chapter’s
Education Committee and the DeKalb School System these
men began the program in three schools: Snapfinger,
Wadsworth and Knollwood Elementary Schools.
